Bridging Positions

Bridging positions serve to support particularly qualified young female scientists in acquiring their own third-party funding. The funding addresses women who plan to continue their academic career towards a professorship. The goal of the one-year funding is to submit a third-party funding proposal at the end, which will enable further financing of the postdoc phase. Within the period of funding, recipients are required to develop a proposal for their own habilitation or research project and prepare and submit an application for third-party funding of their research.

  • How is funding provided?

Female postdoctoral scholars who want to continue or start their scientific career at a department of Philipps-Universität Marburg are eligible to apply.

Funding is granted in the form of a fixed-term training position of one year’s duration at the E 13 pay grade (50%).

A prerequisite for employment in a postdoctoral position is a completed doctorate (incl. disputation). I.e., a doctoral degree certificate is required for hiring by the Human Resources Department or a provisional certificate of completion of the doctoral studies by the respective department.

Organizationally, the position is assigned to the professorship of the mentor.

Bridging positions are awarded for twelve months and must commence in the current year. i.e. no later than by 10/01 of the calendar year.

  • What is not funded?

Bridging positions are financed by funds of the Female Professors Program of the Federal Government and the States to Promote Equal Opportunity in Science and Research.

Unfortunately, due to the limited budget of these project-funded qualification positions, it is not possible to extend them after 12 months. Likewise, positions with more than 50 percent of the usual working hours cannot be awarded.

However, it is possible to hold another position at the E 13 pay grade (50%) at Philipps University in addition to the bridging position.

    Living-abroad allowances are not granted.

  • Additional information

Funding is provided in accordance with the Guidelines of Philipps-Universität Marburg for the Award of Equal Opportunity Scholarships and Positions for Female Junior Scholars as Funded by the Female Professors Program of the Federal Government and the States. The Committee for Equal Opportunity Scholarships decides on the applications received according to the criteria linked here

At the end of the funding period, a third-party funding application must be submitted.

A final report has to be submitted four weeks after the end of the scholarship at the latest.

  • Current call for applications

Unfortunately, the current funding phase of the female professor program ends in 2024. There will therefore be no new advertisement for doctoral completion scholarships and bridging positions.

From 2025, habilitation completion scholarships for women can again be awarded from the funds of the new professor program. The exact application period has not yet been determined, but as always you will be automatically informed via the university's email distribution list.
