Most research does not move in a straight line from finding a thesis question to drafting answers and writing out the report of one's findings. It is a process of thinking, drafting and revising - not always in this order - over and over. This course develops vital scientific reasoning and reporting skills through the process of putting ideas and thoughts on paper. As the antechamber to a scientific writing course, it offers a number of methods and tools to make you more effective in advancing your research from forming your ideas to making coherent assertions. This course will have you scribble, draw and write to remember, to understand your subject and to establish your own perspective on it.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • You will be able to boil down broad topics, formulating relevant questions and stating the key problems.
  • You will know how to argument your research well, mastering claims, reasons and evidence as well as warrants.
  • You will be familiar with plotting tools and a method of organizing persuasive outlines.
  • You will be able to craft your facts into a clear and engaging story. You will also know how to use storytelling to move your thought process along.
  • You will be aware of how to include a visual thinking approach when developing your reasoning.
