In this module, the students work with the information-technological foundations of data management in the humanities and social sciences. These are introduced in a lecture in an application-oriented manner. In the recitation, the technology that was introduced in the lecture are applied through programming assignments (primarily in Python). 

Once the module is completed, the students are able to depict the essential technology that is used to save and process research data in the humanities and social sciences. They can complete simple programming tasks and present the results. They will have learned how to compare and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various technological solutions to data management

  • Lecture (2 hours per week)

  • Lecture: attendance, preparation and review (60 hours)
  • Recitation: attendance, preparation and review (90 hours)
  • Exam and preparation (30 hours) 
Language German or English 
Prerequisites Basic programming knowledge in Python is expected (taught in the module “Introduction to Information Technology”)
Module can be applied as
  • Required module for M.A. Cultural Data Studies
  • Export module 
Requirements to earn credit
  • At least 50% of the points from the weekly assignments must be earned. At least two assignments are to be presented orally. 
  • Module exam: written exam (90-120 minutes) or oral exam (20-30 minutes)
