The Marburg political science major provides fundamental knowledge of political science and the ability to work independently as a scientist using the appropriate methods.
The aim of political science education at Marburg is to enable students to scientifically describe and analyse the interrelationships of social and political life and to gain critical insights from them.
This major provides a comprehensive scientific foundation in the subject of political science (political theory, political system of the Federal Republic of Germany, comparative political science, international relations, empirical methods of political science). The scope of the course is complemented by topics specific to Marburg, such as the "critique of gender relations" and "political economy". There are also interdisciplinary topics such as democratic research, structural conflicts in modern societies, international political economy and global and regional politics. The major is distinguished from the minor by the fact that the curriculum is broader and more intensive.
The major integrates modules oriented towards professional practice, such as vocational orientation and internship.

An integral part of the combined Bachelor's degree is the MarSkills programme, in which you will acquire valuable, future-oriented skills.

Prospects

Students majoring in political science are qualified - depending on their individual combination of subjects - to work in the following occupational fields:

  • Political offices at regional, state, federal and international level
  • Policy advice
  • Journalism
  • Public relations
  • Management, administration and lecturing positions
  • Political education, political youth and adult education
  • Further education
  • Science

If you have a strong interest in science, you can also go straight into a Master's degree. The University of Marburg offers a wide range of options: for example, the Master's in Political Science, the Master's in Political Integration and Economic GlobalisationMaster's in Politics and Economics of the Near and Middle East and the Master's in Peace and Conflict Studies. The PhD provides access to scientific professions.

The choice of your major subject will decisively shape your professional qualifications profile. In conjunction with one or two minor subjects, your relevant work experience (e.g. internships, part-time jobs, voluntary work) and your personal skills, it will enable you to refine your profile and carve out your own individual array of career options.
