  • The Department of Gender Studies is a small and dynamic department that has expanded and developed its research profile since 1978. It has played a central role at Lund University in moving gender analysis from the margins in most disciplines to the centre of social and cultural analysis.

The Department has a long tradition and practice of cooperation over disciplinary borders, and is well connected to national and international networks and cooperation with an ability to develop, apply for and receive funding for research projects. Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary department in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University. We offer education from undergraduate to doctoral level. Research within the department is conducted within several fields and from a variety of theoretical perspectives. The Department of Gender Studies has also served as a central arena for the creation and institutionalization of networks for researchers in the field of Gender Studies as well as for the interaction between the research community and civil society. Our research and teaching profile are based on the notion that social and cultural processes always are gendered, as well as on the understanding that gender is intersectionally connected to other social categories, such as class, ‘race’/ethnicity, sexuality, disability and age. New developments in postcolonial studies, masculinity studies, queer and crip theory are central to current theoretical and analytical debates in gender studies.Teaching at the Department of Gender Studies is based on research and the academic staff is active in local, national and international research networks.
