During the defense of your doctoral thesis, you have to present your research to the board of examiners and then answer critical questions. This workshop is designed to prepare you optimally for this situation. The first part of the workshop will provide practical tips for your introductory presentation: how to structure the presentation, how to build your central argument, what language to use, and so on. The second part of the workshop will deal with typical problems that occur during the discussion: how to respond to criticism and “killer questions”, how to deal with stage fright, mental blocks, and similar. The third part of the workshop will offer you the opportunity to give your presentation and receive feedback from the group and trainer.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • You will be able to give a convincing and well-structured presentation (input and exercises on argumentation and presentation techniques).
  • You will be able to deal in a confident manner with counterarguments and critical questions (test presentations and discussion exercises).
  • You will be well prepared and feel confident about your thesis defense (input on setting, roles, and expectations concerning thesis defense).
