This major provides a comprehensive study of linguistics, enabling you to develop proficiency in all of the subdisciplines of modern linguistics. The combination of linguistic and vocational or application-oriented modules provides qualifications for numerous professions in the field of communication.
The main focus of the major degree is to provide you with linguistic knowledge that enables you to analyse language and communication across a wide range of disciplines and settings.
You can expand your knowledge across four exciting subjects: linguistics and conversation research, text linguistics and pragmatics, language history and variation, and psycho- and neurolinguistics. If you spend a semester abroad, it is possible to take modules at a foreign university via "Studium International" and have them credited.
An integral part of the combined Bachelor's degree is the MarSkills programme, in which you will acquire valuable, future-oriented skills.

Prospects

As a graduate of the Language and Communication major, you will qualify for numerous professions in communication; the skills acquired in the field of study will prepare you for the following professions:

  • Public Relations
  • Management consultancy
  • Intercultural communication
  • Speech training
  • Publishing work
  • Work in the field of text-based and audio media
  • Marketing and consulting
  • Research
  • Speech therapy (in conjunction with the Master's degree in Clinical Linguistics)
  • Language teacher in German as a foreign language (in conjunction with the Master's degree in German as a Foreign Language)

You should be aware that the degree programme does not explicitly train students to become interpreters, journalists, or to work in the media sector or in communication management, and is deliberately designed to be more general.

The choice of your major subject will decisively shape your professional qualifications profile. In conjunction with one or two minor subjects, your relevant work experience (e.g. internships, part-time jobs, voluntary work) and your personal skills, it will enable you to refine your profile and carve out your own individual array of career options.
