Sprache und Kommunikation / Language and Communication (Bachelor of Arts)

Program: Sprache und Kommunikation / Language and Communication
Degree: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
Program length: 6 semesters / 3 years (180 ECTS points)

The Sprache und Kommunikation / Language and Communication bachelor's program educates you to be a multilingual expert in language and communication. The core focus of the program is therefore the imparting of linguistic skills which enable you to analyze language and communication in a wide variety of fields and contexts. In addition to linguistic skills, technical language qualifications and foreign language skills, you will also learn targeted, profession-oriented key qualifications. Every student is assigned a personal mentor. Successful graduates who would like to receive further qualification after completing the bachelor's program can transition to a broad range of postgraduate and master's programs, in consideration of their qualification for an academic career (e.g. M.A. in Clinical Linguistics, M.A. in Linguistics: Cognition and Communication, M.A. in Speech Science, M.A. in German as a Foreign Language).

Major topics

The Sprache und Kommunikation / Language and Communication bachelor's program provides great room for specialization:

For example, in the area of foreign languages, you can choose freely from different languages at different levels, such as two basic level modules in different foreign languages, a basic and an advanced module in the same foreign language or two advanced modules in different languages. This allows you to establish a linguistic and cultural emphasis, already during your studies, with respect to your later field of employment.

The non-linguistic elective area is created as preparation for the chosen professional field. Here, you can acquire important additional qualifications, such as in business management, education, political science or history.

If you are already considering a master's degree when beginning the "Sprache und Kommunikation/Language and Communication" program, you should ensure that you choose major topic content in the bachelor's program which will facilitate the transition to your chosen master's program.

Objectives

As a graduate of the Sprache und Kommunikation / Language and Communication bachelor's program, you can work professionally in widely varying fields:

As a linguist, you are of interest to all types of media, can go into politics, particularly with a semantic or linguistic focus, or work in corporate public relations. With a phonetic-phonological alignment from attending corresponding seminars in the program, you can work with or on systems for linguistic data processing. In addition, you can undertake a teaching career (German as a foreign language or one/more foreign languages) after acquiring your degree.

Overall, you should understand that the program does not explicitly train you as an interpreter, journalist or for work in the media industry or communications management, but rather is deliberately more open-ended. Nevertheless, it is naturally possible to work in these fields after studying, as surveys of graduates have shown.

From these reports from graduates we know that they work in the following professional fields (provided that the program was not continued with a Master):

  • Media (editorial work in the press, radio, television),
  • Human resources consulting agencies,
  • Industry (corporate communications),
  • Intercultural communication.

In addition to studying performance, the professional fields mentioned above normally resulted from the impression that students made during an internship. The importance of choosing an internship spot and the performance during the internship thus cannot be overstated.
