Invitation to our Authors

For more than a century, the „Zeitschrift für Dialektologie und Linguistik“ (ZDL) (formerly „Zeitschrift für hochdeutsche Mundarten“, „Zeitschrift für Deutsche Mundarten“,  Teuthonista“, and „Zeitschrift für Mundartforschung“) has been the leading international journal for the linguistic study of German in all aspects of its regional characteristics and dynamics. In addition to its clear profile, the caliber of its authors, and its ongoing efforts to ensure quality, the ZDL owes its international standing to the use of German as a language of scholarship.

It is no coincidence that our subscriptions span over 30 countries. Anyone in a German studies department at a European or non-European university who makes the German language the central focus of their research and teaching also wishes to be able to follow scholarly discourse in the language of academia and relies on relevant texts in their classes.

In ZDL, English abstracts and—depending on the topic or author—English-language articles have been the norm for decades. What is new, however, is that various academic organizations in German-speaking countries are now beginning to recognize only English-language publications for certain funding programs, even in philological disciplines. To ensure that native German-speaking early-career authors are not hindered in this regard, the ZDL will therefore accept English-language texts in such cases and, following a preliminary review of their content and linguistic quality, submit them to the peer-review process.

However, all authors whose native language is German are still warmly invited to use German as the language of publication.
