LOEWE Center DynaRel Launches in Marburg: Exploring Dynamics of Religious Coexistence

The LOEWE Center DynaRel – Dynamics of the Religious: Ambivalent Neighborhoods between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in Historical and Contemporary Contexts – is a new interdisciplinary research initiative that explores the complex religious, cultural, and political dynamics among the three major monotheistic religions. Central to this approach is the concept of "ambivalent neighborhoods," which examines both the close historical and spatial connections and the tensions between these religions. The project aims to provide a nuanced understanding of current challenges at the intersection of religion and politics.
The center is led by Prof. Dr. Christian Wiese from Goethe University Frankfurt, with co-spokespersons Prof. Dr. Armina Omerika and Dr. Antje Röder. The Marburg team includes Prof. Dr. Albrecht Fuess from Islamic Studies and Prof. Dr. Antje Röder from Sociology, who collaborate on interdisciplinary questions related to multireligious coexistence, migration, and the handling of diversity in plural societies.
DynaRel is situated in Hesse, particularly focusing on the Rhine-Main region, but its implications extend beyond this context. The project is funded by the state of Hesse from January 2026 to December 2029 with a total of €19 million, involving close cooperation between the universities of Marburg, Frankfurt, and Giessen, as well as other national and international partners.
