Dr. Pierre Hecker

Biographical note:

Pierre Hecker is a senior researcher and lecturer in Islamic and Contemporary Turkey Studies at Philipps-Universität Marburg. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig. Between 2017 and 2020, he was head of the research group ‘Ne mutlu ateistim diyene.’ Atheism and the Politics of Culture in Contemporary Turkey funded by Stiftung Mercator. He is the author of the book Turkish Metal: Music, Meaning, and Morality in a Muslim Society (Ashgate, 2012; Routledge, 2016) and co-edited the book  The Politics of Culture in Contemporary Turkey (Edinburgh University Press, 2022). Other recent publications include “Satan, Sex, and an Islamist Zombie Apocalypse: Religion-sceptical Publicity and Blasphemy in Turkish Cartoons and Comic Books” (UCL Press, 2022), “Resistance through Nonperformance: Atheism and Nonreligion in Turkey” (Berghahn, 2023), and “Metal in the Middle East” (Cambridge University Press, 2023).
