The teaching language is English. Therefore, students need to demonstrate their English language proficiency at the level C1 according to the Common European Reference Framework for Languages.

The programme is open to students with a completed B.Sc. degree in the fields of Economics or Geography (Human and/or Physical). Degrees from German and international universities are welcome.

Students with a commensurate qualification can apply, too. A commensurate Bachelor degree is defined as follows:

  • at least 50 ECTS credits were obtained in conceptual or academic modules. Out of these 30 ECTS credits must refer to Economics or Geography content. Up to 20 ECTS credits may be completed in a social science course.
  • additionally, 10 ECTS credits must have been completed in the field of research methods, including Quantitative and Qualitative Empirical Research Methods, Empirical Economic Research, Econometrics, Mathematics, Statistics, and Cartography. This refers to obtaining knowledge of these methods, rather than their application.

A commission will evaluate whether these criteria are met.

In case, students have not yet received their B.Sc. certificate, 80% of the previous course are to be completed by the application deadline. The demonstration of completion must contain an overall average grade on the basis of modules completed. Enrolment in the M.Sc. course will only be possible if all assessments required for the B.Sc. degree will be completed by 30.09. A Bachelor certificate will have to be submitted by the end of the first teaching period (February of the following year).
