Linux Workstation

Debian GNU/Linux provides the HRZ workstations with a variant of the free Linux operating system. Similar to our Windows workstations, these workstations are also integrated into our infrastructure and therefore offer a number of advantages. Debian is a free Linux operating system maintained by a global community, which is also frequently used in the scientific field.

Notes

  • Debian is installed via opsi, currently in version 12 (“Bookworm”).
  • The Linux workstation comes with a good basic set of software. However, it does not offer the same range of software as the Windows workstation.
  • No licenses are required for the operating system. However, integration of the workstation into Active Directory requires a Windows Server CAL or equivalent.
  • Currently, only stationary operation in the university network “via cable” is planned and supported. Use on laptops is still in development.
  • The provision of a Linux workstation computer is coordinated with the IT administrations of the departments and institutions.
