Placement Procedure for the German as a Foreign Language Semester Course

A) Information on placement  


Who has to take a placement test?
  • All students and members of the Philipps-Universität who have not yet been placed by the language center's placement test.
Who does not need to take a placement test?
  • All 0-beginners: all those with no previous knowledge.
  • Course continuators.
What is the placement procedure?    

1. The placement procedure must be completed using the learning platform ILIAS.
1. First, fill out a survey (learning biography). 
2. Second, you will receive a link to a C-test.
3. Please complete the C-test.   
How do I take the assessment?

1. You can take a sample test in advance on this site.
2. Please log in to ILIAS using your student or staff account.
3. You click on the link to the survey.
4. You can access the C-test link after completing the survey. There are five short test sections where you must fill in the words to make the texts coherent.

  • You will find a short anonymous sample C test here. 

    Important:
    You have to log in to the ILIAS learning platform to take part in the survey.
    You finish the learning biography first, and you will then get a link to the C-test.

C) Information on the classification result

Once the survey has been analyzed, you can access your final ranking from 15 April at 2pm. HERE.
Next to the score is a link to the course offer for the semester. The registration for our summer semester courses will be possible from Wednesday, the 15th of April, 2025, at 6 pm.  Please choose the course you would like to attend.

If your result is unclear, you will see a "?"
This means that your categorization has not yet been fully evaluated, or we would like to speak to you so that we can categorize you correctly. Please call us or come directly to our DaF office (Biegenstraße 12/Room 010).

D) Applicants without university affiliation

If you are not a member of Philipps-Universität, you will initially receive the initial result "E" (for “external”). 
You can only register with a registration form. If there are no available places left, you will not be shown a final test result.
