Writing and publishing academic papers in English is increasingly becoming a requirement for most, if not all, scientific disciplines. However, the details and conventions involved with producing academic-level texts can be quite challenging for authors, particularly for those whose native language is not English.

This two-day workshop is designed to identify and expand on the topic of scientific writing in English, and to make the writing process more accessible. The workshop will focus on the format of an academic paper, including paragraph structure, linking and cohesive elements, and proofreading and editing. In addition, language accuracy will be covered, such as syntax, tone and register, punctuation, citation styles, and correcting sentence problems. Doctoral candidates will have the opportunity to examine and critique sample academic texts.

There will be two two-hour follow-up sessions (May 22, 2017, 3 pm–5:30 pm, and June 9, 2017, 3 pm–5:30 pm) to give participants the opportunity to discuss texts they have written or revised, based on the material covered in the two instructional sessions.
