This workshop will address the different research logics in qualitative and quantitative methods. We will discuss their respective strengths and limitations and, in particular, their applicability to your own empirical projects.
The aim of the workshop is to strengthen your judgement in deciding which method(s) might be appropriate to your topic or research question and which decision guidelines are helpful in finding good solutions. The theoretical/methodological issues and implications will be dealt with by discussing your (planned) research designs. You are therefore invited to bring your own ideas, research outlines, or exposés for your PhD project.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • You will have basic knowledge for distinguishing qualitative and quantitative methods and their epistemological underpinnings (instructor's presentation).
  • You will know how to judge what kind of empirical data you need and which methodological approaches are likely to generate the required data (lecture and discussion of research outlines).
  • You will be able to assess these methodological approaches with regard to their applicability to your own research problem (small group discussions).
  • You will be capable of justifying a well-integrated (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods) research project.

Requirements

The specific purpose of your research should already be clarified. Please submit a research outline to anna.brake@phil.uni-augsburg.de no later than two weeks before the workshop.

To participate in the online course, you need a PC/laptop with a current browser (recommended: Chrome or Firefox) as well as a headset (or speakers and a microphone), possibly a webcam, and a stable Internet connection.
