EMF – Intellectual Property Rights – Online Course

This workshop will give you an understanding of intellectual property law and shows you how to control your own academic work.

It is good academic practice to build on the work of others. However, such work can be protected by intellectual property rights like copyrights. This workshop will enable you to navigate the field of intellectual property law in a research context. On the one hand, you will get to know whether and how you can control the use of your own work. On the other hand, you will learn how to take advantage of the discretion researchers have to use others’ work without consulting the holder of rights first.

Intended Learning Outcomes

• You will be able to differentiate between copyrights and other intellectual property rights by getting to know the different rights and their scope (trainer input, discussion).
• You will understand how copyrights are protected by law and how you can use copyrighted works by making use of copyright limitations (trainer input, discussion).
• You will be able to determine what intellectual property rights apply to your own creations by learning how to interpret the legal requirements (group work on case studies, your own research project).
• You will know what intellectual property rights are affected by your research project and how to apply your newly gained knowledge of legal requirements to determine whether you need to obtain a license for using them (application to your own research project).

Requirements

To participate in the online course, you need a PC/laptop with a current browser (recommended: Chrome or Firefox) as well as a headset (or speakers and a microphone), possibly a webcam, and a stable Internet connection.

Proficiency in English at the B2 level of competency is required.

This workshop is part of the certifying program "Designing and Managing Research Projects" (EMF).

Please note that registration is always binding. You may cancel your registration up to twelve days before the course begins without providing specific reasons. Thereafter, you will be required to pay the attendance fee even if you do not attend the course.
