Philipps-Universität Marburg MARA F|05, Deutschhausstraße 11+13 Seminar room 01.0010

This workshop, designed specifically for doctoral candidates and recent doctoral graduates, focuses on the distinctive aspects of applying for jobs in industry and in research worldwide in English. It provides training in navigating selected stages of that process, including creating your curriculum vitae and cover letter and presenting yourself convincingly in the interview. We'll examine sample CVs and cover letters (including ones which are real and were successful), exploring them for strengths as well as for what they reveal about differences between applications for industry and those for short-term research positions such as post-docs. You'll work with fellow participants in pairs and small groups to do short exercises and role-plays with feedback from your trainer. The workshop is held in English by a native speaker.

Follow-up option: CV and cover-letter check online. On Friday, September 15, interested participants will have the opportunity to have their CV and/or cover letter checked in individual consultations with the trainer. This extension gives you the chance to apply principles discussed in our workshop to your own written materials and receive feedback. Appointments can be arranged at the end of our workshop.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • You are, by examining selected aspects of the curriculum vitae, familiar with principles which can help you make your own CV clearer and more compelling (presentation input, handout, discussion, feedback).
  • You have an overview of formal matters relevant when writing a cover letter as well as insights into choosing and structuring the letter’s content effectively (presentation input, handout).
  • You are able to present yourself more confidently and convincingly in English-language interviews (presentation input, role-plays, feedback).
  • You are aware of several resources you can explore for positions (handout).

Didactic Methods

Trainer input, exploration of examples, small-group exercise, whole-class discussion, role-plays with feedback, analysis of individual application materials with feedback
