Writing Lab – Producing an Academic Paper in the Humanities and Social Sciences – Online Course

This workshop addresses junior scholars from the social sciences, economics, and humanities who are interested in publishing an article in an English-language journal. The goal is to provide an understanding of the general structure and "choreography" of academic publications and hands-on assistance to participants writing their own papers.

The workshop will begin by discussing typical problems encountered when writing an academic publication and ways to facilitate the writing process. We will then address the typical organization of academic publications. This will involve having a detailed look at the basic components of an academic paper, what we need to pay attention to in each part, where to place which elements, and what tenses are typically used. Particular attention will be paid to the essential benefits of, and how to think about, developing a clear "storyline" and being clear on your "take-home message."

Intended Learning Outcomes

• You will be familiar with the general structure of academic publications.
• You will have learned strategies of how to approach the task of writing papers.
• You will have a clear understanding of the basic components of an academic paper, what is important in each part, where to place which elements, and what tenses to use.
• You will be aware of the importance of and how to go about developing a clear storyline and being clear on the key message of your paper.

Requirements

Prior attendance of our "English Academic Writing for the Humanities and Social Sciences" is recommended but not mandatory.

Please bring two or three publications from your field of research that might serve as a model for your planned publication. Think about the key message of your planned article and a rough outline of your argument.

To participate in the online course you need a PC/laptop with a current browser as well as a headset (or speakers and microphone), a webcam, and a stable Internet connection.

Proficiency in English at the B2 level of competency is required.
