Scientific writing is a skill that can be learned and mastered with discipline and commitment.
In this workshop, you will develop a set of "how-to" strategies for writing journal articles and theses and improve the quality of your writing. We will not only focus on technical skills like structuring a scientific article, constructing clear sentences, or structuring the writing process but also cover writing productivity, developing habits and an appropriate mindset, and using tools properly to assist you in writing. Last but not least, we will explore self-management techniques for staying motivated throughout the writing process and discuss the problem of procrastination and perfectionism in writing.
As we address all of these factors in the workshop, you will gain a more well-rounded understanding of what it takes to be a successful writer. We will also discuss the role of AI-based tools/software in assisting writers. During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to draft part of their current writing project (e.g., a journal article or a thesis, 1 to 2 pages). To facilitate this, participants should consider in advance which writing task they would like to pursue during the workshop.
Qualification Outcomes
At the end of the workshop, you will
- be familiar with strategies to overcome common writer's blocks related to procrastination and perfectionism,
- be aware of the key structural components of a scientific article,
- be able to identify principles of clarity in a text,
- have a solid foundation for writing a journal article or thesis,
- know how to use strategies/tools to increase writing productivity, and
- understand the broader perspective of the writing process.
