This workshop provides an overview of the legal basis for fixed-term employment contracts for academic staff at universities and research institutions. Employment contracts for academic staff are concluded on the basis of the "Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz". For university-funded positions, the maximum fixed term is 12 years. The workshop will explain how this is calculated and how contract extensions due to childcare or parental leave are taken into account.
However, many academic staff are also employed in third-party-funded positions at the university. In this case, it is not the maximum duration of the academic contract that is important, but rather the availability of third-party funding for a specific task and duration of a project. The applicable regulations and their effects on the maximum term limit will be discussed in detail in the workshop.
