Urban Geography, Spatial Planning and Development

More than 80 percent of the world's population lives in urban agglomerations. While urbanisation is moderate in industrialised countries it is intensifying in developing countries to such an extent that urban structure and organisation is becoming unmanageable.

Urban Geography in Marburg focuses on the analysis of urban structures and developments in different political, cultural and socio-economic contexts in order to detect and understand emerging trends. Methodologies range from cartography to quantitative analyses (univariate, bivariate and multivariate) to qualitative research.

The regional focus is on urban developments in Europe and Latin America.

Spatial Planning and Development in Marburg focuses on the instruments and organisation of spatial planning and the assessment of spatial development strategies. Moreover, this group analyses distribution patterns of spatial parameters (population, employment, infrastructure, etc.) through time in order to guide future policy-making.
