The International Research and Documentation Centre for War Crimes Trials (ICWC)

Two-day research workshop at the ICWC

On 16th and 17th January, the ICWC received researchers of the international cooperation project JUSINBELLGIUM from Brussels to discuss in a two-day workshop previous success and future plans for the project. Dr. Wolfgang Form and other members of the ICWC participated in the event and contributed to a successful and dynamic meeting.

Dr. Delphine Lauwers (Belgian State Archive), Dr. Ornella Rovetta (Université Libre de Bruxelles) and Mr. Hendrik Vandekerckhove (Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies) represented the Belgian research team and also arranged the second ICWC-colloquium this month. They presented already achieved results of research and outlined their approach and challenges concerning the digitization process of war crimes trial-files of the 1920s and 1940s. The main part of documents - more than 100,000 pages -  has already been digitized and processed so that future researchers are offered an extraordinary basis for their research.
Another important element of the project is the provision of documents and information in the ICC's Legal Tools-database. JUSINBELLGIUM already uploaded 16 cases so far. In the framework of the workshop, the next steps for the provision of further documents were coordinated.
Moreover, a main element of future cooperation between the Belgian partners and the ICWC is supposed to be the provision of an Access-database which connects the cases with witnesses and the legislation applied.
The Workshop was a success allround and we are looking forward to further cooperation.
