Studying Geography in Marburg – compact, connected, in the heart of the city

Studying geography in Marburg means: short distances, strong content, and an inspiring environment. The Department of Geography is located centrally in Marburg’s city center – all courses, workspaces, and offices are housed in two neighboring buildings, the Deutsches Haus and the Carolinenhaus (Campus Firmanei C). The historic Deutsches Haus, dating back to the 13th century, is located right next to the Elisabeth Church – a special place for learning and research in the very heart of the city.

With around 900 students, the department offers a personal atmosphere and individual supervision – a clear advantage compared to larger universities. Whether in the Bachelor’s, Master’s, or teacher training program, Marburg’s geography has been convincing for years with short study durations and high student satisfaction.

Around the campus, you will find everything you need for your daily university lifecafés, supermarkets, restaurants – and just a few steps away, the modern new university library with ideal learning and working conditions.

Geographically, Marburg is also perfectly situated: the city is embedded in a diverse natural landscape – ideal for field work courses, excursions, and outdoor leisure activities. At the same time, the city is very well connected thanks to the ICE train station just a few minutes away. With one of the most extensive semester tickets in Germany, you can travel quickly and flexibly in all directions – to Frankfurt, Cologne, Kassel, Göttingen, Darmstadt, Leipzig, or further.

Broad teaching portfolio – with depth and practical relevance

In Marburg, you will experience a comprehensively structured geography curriculum, divided into the fields of Physical Geography, Human Geography, and Geography Didactics. Methodology plays a major role in all areas. An overview of the current course offerings can be found in the MARVIN course catalog, and detailed information on the study content of our programs is available here on our website.

Research with a view to the world of tomorrow

In research, the department places a particular focus on biodiversity assessment and modeling, societal transformation and environmental dynamics, and the planning and design of resilient spaces and societies. In every project, the focus is on the role of humans in global change processes. Geography in Marburg combines natural and social science perspectives and offers an interdisciplinary, innovative research environment – ideal for scientifically exploring and actively shaping the key challenges of the future.
