Workshop “‘Clash of Normativities’ – Toward a Sociology of Expectation Contexts”

On February 15 and 16, 2024, the workshop “‘Clash of Normativities’ – Toward a Sociology of Expectation Contexts” took place at Philipps University, organized by Dr. Linda Nell (Georg-August University Göttingen), Dr. Henning de Vries (ICWC | Philipps University Marburg), and PD Dr. Marc Mölders (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz). The event was a collaborative initiative of the AK Normativities and the Section of Sociology of Law of the German Sociological Association.

Content:

Especially in the aftermath of violent conflicts, different expectation contexts—such as cultural norms, state legal systems, and international law—intersect and can stand in conflicting or even contradictory relationships to one another. Such conflicting expectations create burdens for all parties involved, which can become the source of new conflicts. Transitional justice processes negotiate the acceptability of contradictory expectation contexts. Are certain societal sectors more vulnerable to conflicts between normative orders than others? How must relationships between expectation contexts be organized in order to be recognized as an order? How much contradiction between expectation contexts can (social) order reasonably tolerate? This also includes considering scientifically skeptical or ideologically driven movements that provoke and produce communicative contradictions between expectation contexts.

The complete workshop program can be found here.

We have concluded an exciting event, which participants used for exchanging ideas and networking.

Focus area in the Journal for Theoretical Sociology

The workshop has also resulted in a focus section in the Journal for Theoretical Sociology. Starting with issue 1 of 2025, contributions from the workshop and beyond will be published. Feel free to check it out!
