62nd International Conference on Military History under the title “Violence is a ‘True Chameleon’”
From September 12 to 14, 2023, the 62nd International Conference on Military History took place in Dresden under the title “Violence is a ‘True Chameleon’”. Among the participants was ICWC Managing Director Dr. Henning de Vries.
The conference focused on the transformations, persistences, and emergences of military violence. In this context, Dr. de Vries discussed, together with Prof. Dr. Isabelle Deflers (University of the Bundeswehr Munich) and other participants, the relationship between law and military violence. Can law transform military violence, or is it persistent in relation to it? Could law even, in a counterintuitive way, contribute to the persistence of violence? What new structures and organizations (e.g., ICC, ad hoc tribunals) are emerging to address and regulate military violence?
