Placement Procedure

Who must take a placement test?

  • If you have never learned any German, you clearly do not have to take a placement test. Your only booking option then is an A1.1 course.
  • If you have learned some German in the past, a placement test is mandatory. The result will indicate at which level you can continue at the Language Center.
  • Exception: Students who have successfully completed a German course at the Language Center in the previous semester can book a class on the next level without an additional test (follow-up registration). However, this is limited to a certain period of time, as specified in the email notifications sent out to those eligible for follow-up registration.

What does the placement test for German as a Foreign Language look like?

The placement test for German as a foreign language is a written online-test and consists of two parts. The results of both parts are combined to make a final result. Course registrations are possible only if both parts of the test have been completed.

Placement test part 1

Contents: Personal questions; multiple choice questions; writing task;

Online from Monday, 5 September 2022, 9:00 a.m. to Wednesday 12 October 2022, 9 a.m.

Placement test part 2

Contents: 5 short texts with gaps that need to be filled so that the texts make sense. You can try out this format by doing a short anonymous sample test.

Online from Monday, 5 September 2022, 9:00 a.m. to Wednesday 12 October 2022, 9 a.m.

Please note: The result of part 2 will be shown directly after the test, but this is not the final placement result.

There is a last chance for the placement test, in our Self Study Center (room 00-015): Monday, 17 Oct. 2022, 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.
You can go there directly, without a prior registration. Please bring your own headset and wear a mask.

Placement results

You can access your final placement test result from Friday 14 October 2022, 9:00 a.m. HERE. Next to the score is a link to the course offer; you can choose from all courses with a corresponding placement result.

If your test result is ambiguous, you will see a question mark ("?").
This means that we need to talk to you for a valid placement, and we will invite you to a video conference on either Friday 14 October 2022 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday 17 October 2022 between 10 and 12 a.m. OR Tuesday 18 October 2022 between 10 and 12 a.m. You will get the precise date and the link for the conference via email.

During the time slots on Monday and Tuesday, you can also come by in person, if you have questions about placement or registration.

If you are not a member of Philipps-Universität, you will initially receive the initial result "E" (for “external”).
You can only register some time after the regular registration period has started, i.e. from Thursday, 20 October 2022, 3:00 p.m. For technical reasons, your final placement result will not be published before that time. If there are no available places, you will not be shown a final test result.

For any questions concerning your placement test results and course registration options, please contact the coordinator for German, Dr. Susanne Duxa.
