Event language: English

When we aim to capture, organize, and document information, we usually rely on written language. Yet complex ideas can often be understood and communicated more effectively through simple drawings, symbols, and visual structures. Sketchnoting offers an accessible approach to visual note-taking that helps make connections visible, develop ideas, and communicate knowledge more clearly.

In this workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of sketchnoting and visual thinking and explore how these methods can support your academic work. Through practical exercises, you will develop simple symbols, visual metaphors, and organizational techniques that can be applied directly to research-related topics. Particular emphasis is placed on creating an individual visual language connected to your own research interests and disciplinary context. Whether for lecture notes, literature reviews, field notes, project planning, or conference presentations, sketchnoting can help you structure and communicate complex information in a clear, memorable, and engaging way.

No prior drawing experience is required.

Qualification Outcomes

After the workshop, you will be able to

  • Understand the principles of sketchnoting and visual thinking in academic contexts.
  • Use drawing as a practical tool for thinking, learning, and documentation.
  • Structure and simplify complex information and relationships visually.
  • Use simple symbols, icons, and visual metaphors to represent academic concepts.
  • Developed a personal visual vocabulary related to your own field of research.
  • Create a visual map that represents the key elements of your research project.
  • Apply strategies for integrating sketchnoting into teaching, and science communication.

Methods

Trainer input, practical sketchnoting and drawing exercises, individual work based on participants’ own research topics, reflection and peer exchange, development of personal visual symbols, creation of a visual research map

All participants will receive a blank 40-page notebook and a high-quality sketchnote marker. Throughout the workshop, the notebook will gradually be filled with exercises, symbols, visual structures, and sketchnotes. It serves both as a working tool during the workshop and as a personalized reference guide that participants can continue to use in their academic practice.
