Contents
The Social and Cultural Anthropology minor teaches students to identify the fundamental forms and dimensions of social coexistence, and to analyse and differentiate between their foundations. Students can also research the causes, dynamics, interpretations and forms of conflict and explore the interactions between people and the environment and how they are transformed. Students gain hands-on experience by working on and with objects in the department's ethnographic collection while discussing their social and cultural meanings. You will have the opportunity to focus on regional societies in the Americas and the Caribbean.
An integral part of the combined Bachelor's degree is the MarSkills programme, in which you will acquire valuable, future-oriented skills.
Prospects
The degree programme provides the foundations for a specialised Master's programme in social and cultural anthropology. Students studying the minor degree programme will also be qualified for the following occupational fields
- international institutions and organisations,
- intercultural institutions and migration authorities,
- public administration, associations and institutions,
- museums and non-governmental organisations,
- the media, publishing houses and public relations;
- adult education, cultural institutions and journalism,
- sectors related to development cooperation, international relations and conflicts, tourism, cultural heritage and colonial relations and foreign services;
- and for senior level jobs requiring professional research skills and information analysis in selected subjects.
A minor subject will help you to extend your professional qualifications profile, which is decisively shaped by the choice of your major subject. In conjunction with your major subject, your relevant work experience (e.g. internships, part-time jobs, voluntary work) and your personal skills, it will enable you to refine your profile and carve out your own individual array of career options.
Admission requirements
Higher education entrance qualification:
General higher education entrance qualification or subject-related higher education entrance qualification1 or advanced technical college entrance qualification or master craftsman's examination as well as comparable qualifications of advanced vocational training or vocationally qualified persons.
1The university decides on the validity of the subject restriction for this subject.
Knowledge and skills specific to the subject to be demonstrated prior to admission:
Knowledge of two modern foreign languages (usually English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic or Japanese) at level B1.
One of these foreign languages can be replaced by Latin or Ancient Greek, in which case the level of Latinum or Graecum must be proven.
If students do not have the required language skills in the second foreign language at level B1, they will only be enrolled on the condition that they provide proof of these skills by the time they re-register for the 3rd semester.

In order to apply or enrol, you must also select a major subject and, depending on the study model, an additional minor subject in the online portal.
