Graduate Survey of the Philipps University Marburg

Philipps University of Marburg has been participating in the nationwide cooperation project Graduate Survey (KOAB) since 2008, in which 50-70 (annually fluctuating) universities take part. This scientific research project has been coordinated by the Institute for Applied Statistics (ISTAT) based in Kassel since 2017. ISTAT is a spin-off of the International Center for Higher Education Research (INCHER) at the University of Kassel, which was previously in charge of the project.

The aim of this survey is to investigate the influence of study programs and conditions on the transition into the profession, the further career path and professional success in order to ultimately ensure the quality of education at Philipps University and to improve the professional-practical relevance in close feedback with the requirements of the labor market.

This requires as complete an overview as possible of the current professional situation and the professional careers of all graduates of the graduating class studied during the first few years after graduation.

The following questions, among others, are answered:

  • What was the search for employment like?
  • In which professional and occupational fields do the graduates work?
  • What income, working hours and duration of the employment contract do current graduates have?
  • Does the professional activity match the course content?
  • How do graduates rate their studies in retrospect?

You can find the results in our download area, a description of the graduate survey instrument can be found here.

The project is designed as a longitudinal study. This means that the cohorts surveyed 1-2 years after graduation will be surveyed a second time (4-5 years after graduation) in order to obtain more reliable data on career success and retention. The panel survey will be conducted for the first time in the winter semester 2017/18 and concerns the 2013 examination year. The graduates of 2013 who agreed to take part in a follow-up survey during the initial survey will be invited directly by INCHER on behalf of the project universities. INCHER is expected to conduct the panel surveys until examination year 16 (2020). ISTAT will then take over this task from 2021 with EY 17.

The graph shows the need to send several reminders in order to achieve a response rate of at least 55%.
