Zum Wintersemester 2026 / 2027 schreibt der Fachbereich 09 Germanistik und Kunstwissenschaften der Philipps-Universität Marburg den Master „Fotografie – Medium und Archiv“ aus.

Der Studiengang bietet in vier Semestern die Möglichkeit zur Auseinandersetzung mit den medialen, theoretischen, historischen und archivalischen Dimensionen analoger und digitaler fotografischer Bilder und Praktiken. Er ist forschungsorientiert, interdisziplinär und wird vom Kunstgeschichtlichen Institut und dem Institut für Medienwissenschaft in Verbindung mit dem Deutschen Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg (DDK) getragen. Einbezogen werden Kurse des Masterstudiengangs „Cultural Data Studies“ am Marburg Center for Digital Culture and Infrastructure (MCDCI). Eine Besonderheit des Studiengangs ist die enge Zusammenarbeit mit dem DDK. Studierende profitieren von der interdisziplinären Auseinandersetzung mit theoretischen Positionen zur Fotografie und praxisnahem Arbeiten mit historischen und digitalen Bildbeständen. Zum Angebot gehören: Einblicke in Sammlungspflege, wissenschaftliche Dokumentation und Restaurierung, direkter Zugang zu Fotowerkstatt und modernster Bildtechnologie, Verständnis für digitale Bildinfrastrukturen und Archivprozesse. Mit der Dr. Rolf H. Krauss-Forschungsbibliothek im Forschungsbau des DDK steht Studierenden eine Spezialbibliothek zu Fotografie, Fototechnik und Fotokunst mit über 23 000 Bänden zur Verfügung.

For the winter semester 2026/2027, the Faculty of German Studies and Arts at the University of Marburg will be offering a Master in “Photography – Medium and Archive”. Over the course of four semesters, students have the opportunity to explore the medial, theoretical, historical, and archival dimensions of analogue and digital photography and photographic practices. The degree programme is research-oriented, interdisciplinary, and supported by the Institute of Art History and the Institute of Media Studies in collaboration with the German Documentation Center for Art History – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg (DDK). Selected courses from the Master’s programme in “Cultural Data Studies” at the Marburg Center for Digital Culture and Infrastructure (MCDCI) are also incorporated. A distinctive feature of the programme is its close collaboration with the DDK. Students benefit from an interdisciplinary engagement with theoretical approaches to photography and hands-on work with historical and digital image collections. The study programme thereby offers insights into collection management, scholarly documentation, and restoration; direct access to a photo lab and state-of-the-art imaging technology; and an understanding of digital image infrastructures and archival processes. Through the Dr. Rolf H. Krauss Research Library located in the DDK’s dedicated research building, students have access to a specialized library on photography, photographic technology, and photographic art containing over 23,000 volumes. The teaching language is German.
