Course Selection
Exchange students with a major in mathematics, computer science, data science or a similar study area can choose from a wide selection of Bachelor's and Master's courses. At the mathematics and computer science department in Marburg, exchange students can select their courses regardless of their own current education level. This means that Bachelor students can take Master-level courses and Master students can take Bachelor-level courses, if they meet the course-specific requirements, which are specified in the official online module guide. To find suitable courses (also for the creation of the learning agreement), exchange students need to consider different sources:
- The online module guide is the official course catalog for mathematics, computer science, and data science students at the Philipps-University Marburg. It contains all courses taught at the department 12 with their static information, such as general descriptions, ECTS points, learning goals, and prerequisites.
- The course preview page lists all planned courses for the upcoming semesters. The listing is continuously updated and provides the most recent status of planned courses with their teaching language (German or English) and names of lecturers/instructors.
- The full course catalog contains all courses of all departments of the Philipps-University Marburg. If the specific prerequisites of a course are met, exchange students may take courses from any department. Note that the enrollment processes may differ between departments and grades obtained in other departments need to be communicated explicitly by the exchange student to the foreign representative of the department 12, if these grades should find their way into the final transcript of records!
- The Marvin system is the central course management system for all current courses. The system provides course dates and locations for each semester and also examination dates and locations. Regular, non-exchange students also use Marvin to register for courses and exams, but the registration processes for exchange students is done differently. For this reason, Marvin only serves to check for course dates and locations.
- The Ilias system is a course execution system, in which many courses provide their learning material, slides, lecture recordings, assignments etc. Exchange students can (and usually should) join the courses that they have chosen to take in Ilias to follow all activities and be provided with the necessary material. Whether or not a course is also executed in Ilias depends on the instructor/lecturer of the course. The necessary information on Ilias usage is usually provided in the first session of every course.
- The MobilityOnline system is used to manage all student exchanges at the Philipps-University Marburg. Students need to create their course lists (learning agreement and "Belegliste") in this system, because from these course lists, the International Office will eventually create the transcript of records. If courses are not carefully entered into this system, no grade will be issued for them; courses that are entered but not successfully completed will eventually be listed as failed courses in the transcript of records. Please pay attention to the deadlines for creating these course lists in MobilityOnline, because the lists are considered final after that deadline!
Bachelor-level courses are usually taught in German and Master-level courses are usually taught in English. However, some courses (in particular seminars and projects) can sometimes be switched to English on demand. We therefore recommend that exchange students with a special interest in a specific course contact the lecturers/instructors directly to ask if the course language can be switched.
If additional information is needed about a specific course (e.g. regarding language, topics, schedule, online/offline, correspondence in marvin …), it is also recommend to contact the lecturers/instructors directly (see the course preview page for their names and the staff list for their addresses).
For more details and further instructions on creating a learning agreement, please also consider the detailed descriptions for writing a learning agreement by our international office.
