Incoming students are required to have at least level B1 English skills and we recommend having at least level B1 German skills for courses taught in German. We encourage incoming students to take a preparatory German language course offered by the Philipps-University on site, if they plan to take a class taught in German. Note that taking a language course also grants ECTS points for your exchange in Marburg!

The default instruction and teaching language in Marburg is German for Bachelor level courses and English for Master level courses. For the vast majority of courses including our German Bachelor level courses, learning material is available also in English. Note that all incoming students can take Bachelor and Master level courses in Marburg, regardless of their current level, if they meet the class-specific requirements. For example, basic knowledge of machine learning is prerequisite for a Master level advanced deep learning class or basic database systems knowledge is a prerequisite for a Master level distributed data management class.

If you are in doubt of whether or not your prior knowledge is sufficient, if the availability of English learning material is not stated in the course description, or if you want to ask whether the teaching language can be switched to English, please simply contact the instructor of the course that you are interested in. Our list of professors provides all necessary contact details.
