Course Enrollment

Students at department of "Math and Computer Science" do not need to enroll in main courses - they simply attend the courses that they would like to participate in. However, other departments usually require their students to enroll in their courses. So only if exchange students want to take courses of departments other than Department 12, they need to use the Marvin system to enroll in outside courses.

Note that all courses that are offered to exchange students in Marvin can be taken. The enrollment process is the same as for regular students, but the course portfolio is a bit smaller. So if a course is not listed for you in Marvin, it cannot be taken as an exchange student. Additionally, check if the course is listed in the Ilias system and join the course there as well. This is the place where the lecturers will provide their learning material, task descriptions and (sometimes) lecture recordings and streams. Join the courses in Ilias to access the material, but also ask in class, how and when materials are being shared.

Please note that Marvin and Ilias require 2-factor authentication (2FA). The access details (including TAN list) are provided with the account details.

Exchange students can take Master and Bachelor level courses regardless of their own current level, and Marvin also offers courses from other departments. However, most courses have specific prerequisites, for example, regarding prior knowledge of a specific topic, required preparation classes, or special certificates. For this reason, exchange students need to read the course prerequisites in the course descriptions and module catalog to check, if they meet these requirements before enrolling in a course. If you have any doubts about whether you meet the requirements, please contact the instructor of the course via email.

Also, every course sets its own rules for the exam admission: Students may need to give a presentation, solve a project, or pass all exercises. These requirements are usually explained by the instructors in the beginning of their courses. If students do not pass these requirements during the lecture period, they automatically fail the course without exam permission. Again, if you do not know the rules for exam admission in a specific course or they are not clear to you, contact the instructor in class or via email.

IMPORTANT for Late Arrivals: If you arrive late in Marburg due to, for example, VISA issues, you can get a Late Arrival Letter from the office of the Dean of Academic Affairs (Studiendekanat) stating that your late arrival is possible. Please send an email to functional email studiendekanatfb12 and ask the politely, if the office can provide you with such a letter. State your full name, exchange program (e.g. DAAD, Freemover, Erasmus), and reason for the late arrival. There are a few very important things that late arriving students need to pay attention to:

• Late arriving students still need to enroll in their courses within the enrollment deadline. This can be done remotely.
• Late arriving students also need to follow the coursework to be permitted to the exam. In most cases, this can also be done remotely; some courses are even streamed and/or recorded for remote participation. 
• Late arriving students need to inform their instructors about their late arrival, if a remote start and remote initial participation is not easily possible. Ask early, how you can complete the coursework with a late arrival. If exceptions need to be made, it is every instructor's individual decision, if these exceptions can be made. Some courses cannot be taken with a late arrival and the later an exchange student arrives, the smaller his course options become.
