„Definitional Boundaries of Discrimination”
What counts as racism, sexism, or any other kind of -ism? How do people do the everyday work of making sense of social phenomena, defining some as ‘discrimina-tion’ and some as ‘not discrimination’? Definitional Boundaries of Discrimination (DBDs) describe common sense rules about what does (and does not) count as dis-crimination. For example, the prototypical form of discrimination involves an indi-vidual in a position of power who has malicious intent towards a minoritised group. It should be clear how this version of discrimination is a good fit to some phenome-na (e.g., when claiming that Donald Trump is a racist) but a very bad fit to others (e.g., when claiming that the gender pay gap demonstrates institutional sexism). I will present both qualitative and quantitative data to explore the DBDs that people use; how these DBDs are consequential when making a claim of discrimination; and how DBDs can be used as a methodological tool in related research.
