Here you will find all the important information to complete your application to become an exchange student in our Erasmus+ programme. It is written as a step-by-step guide to help you through the process and serve as a checklist to make all the preparations before your trip!

Application Process for 2026/2027 trips

The application deadline for a stay abroad in the year 2026/2027 ends on 13th of January 2026.

Please note: Only applications which are completed and submitted in two places (1st in Mobility Online and 2nd to Dr Joseph Shafer with "Shafer: Application" as the email title or subject line) will be considered in the selection process!

Detailed information about individual documents and the application process is also available on this website https://www.uni-marburg.de/en/fb10/english-american/international/outgoings/general-information

Step-by-step application guide

  1. First register online at Mobility Online (for the direct link click here).

  2. "Online application": Apply online by completing the questionnaire on Mobility Online. Important: complete all fields. If not, certain options for universities abroad will not be shown.

  3. "Confirmation e-mail of the online application": You receive a confirmation email following the completion of the online questionnaire. In this e-mail you will find a link with which to unlock your account (since this is an automatically generated email, please also check your spam folder).

  4. "Online Registration": Select a username and password for your online registration. The successful unlocking is again confirmed via e-mail.

  5. After receiving the confirmation e-mail, you can log in to Mobility Online and complete the rest of the application.

  6. Please note that you need to upload 2 applications to Mobility Online if you are staying for a whole year: one for each semester. The applications are identical with the only difference being the period of stay.

  7. "Complete personal details": After your successful registration, complete your personal details on Mobility Online.

  8. "Upload passport photo": Upload a passport photograph to Mobility Online.

  9. "Print/download the application form": Download the application form from Mobility Online for additional copies.

  10. "Create a Transcript of Records": You can print a Transcript of Records through Marvin or request a transcript from the Examination Office. The transcript of records for Teacher Education students is available with Christian Hiebel (01C10, Bunsenstraße 2, 35037 Marburg, christian.hiebel@uni-marburg.de) and that of advanced Bachelor students is available with Beni N'Vuala (07D01A, Philologische Fakultät, pruef10@staff.uni-marburg.de). First semester students without grades: upload your school graduation diploma.

  11. Create a list of courses taken: Complete the document “list of attended courses” inclusive of courses in the current semester. The document is available in the ILIAS group (IAA: Erasmus+ 2026/2027 (also 2025/2026)).

  12.  "Upload curriculum vitae": Create a tabular curriculum vitae (in English!) and upload it to Mobility Online. For examples, see the file in our ILIAS folder.

  13.  "Upload cover letter (Motivationsschreiben)": Write a one paged cover letter in English in which you refer to your first choice and upload it to Mobility Online.

  14. Now prepare your copies of the above materials for a second application to be emailed to your department coordinator Dr. Shafer (continue reading for steps).

  15. Write a separate list of your top 5 choices for host universities. List them in order of preference, with “1” being your most preferred host and “5” your least preferred.

  16. Include this “List of Preferred Hosts, 1-5” with all your other application documents and combine into ONE PDF file. This includes the following documents:  Your downloaded application form (2 forms if you are applying to stay two semesters, your curriculum vitae, a cover letter, your transcript of records (original; one version of each is enough!), your “list of courses taken,” a copy of the data sheet (Stammdatenblatt - sent by University of Marburg with each re-enrollment), and a list of your five choices of preferred hosts.

  17. When emailing these documents as ONE combined PDF, email them with the subject-line or title “Shafer: Application” and send to Dr Joseph Shafer at

After the submission of your application

After the application deadline (13 January 2026) applications will be checked and the applicants will be allocated to universities by the departmental coordinator (Dr. Shafer).

Accept/reject allocation: When you are offered a placement to study abroad at a host university, you have to either accept or reject the offer as soon as possible. Please also send an e-mail to the departmental coordinator in case of rejection.

We wish you good luck and all the best for your application to Erasmus 2026/27!
