Prospective Students

The Department of Geography is situated in the heart of Marburg. We are based in the historic Deutschhaus, dating back to the thirteenth century, and the adjacent Carolinenhaus (Campus Firmanei Building C). Both buildings flank St. Elizabeth’s Church, the earliest Gothic church in Germany. Here you will find all departmental facilities, including lecture theatres, seminar rooms, laboratories, computer labs, offices and the library. Being part of a relatively small department you will easily connect with staff and fellow students while you won’t lose time moving between classes. In addition, the Language Centre, University Library, canteen and city centre are only a few steps away.

At the Philipps-Univeristät Marburg we run Bachelor’s, Master’s as well as teaching degree programmes in geography. Courses cover a wide range of subjects that fall into four themes: physical geography, human geography, geosciences and methodology. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach research in the Department of Geography revolves around the causes and consequences of human-induced global changes.

All degree programmes feature core and optional courses. Core courses impart fundamental knowledge and skills, while optional courses allow you to build a programme around your particular topical interests. We are committed to creating an excellent learning environment and providing you with modern, first-class facilities. Moreover, small tutorial groups and motivated academic staff ensure that individual attention is given to all students. In fact, we are ranked among the top geography departments in Germany in terms of student support, student participation in research and IT-infrastructure (CHE University Ranking 2014/15).
