Visitors from Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia

On Thursday, 16 November 2019, several students of Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia paid a visit to the ICWC. The exchange students together with their student coordinator Kim Sun as well as Dr. Wolfgang Form and staff members of the ICWC discussed the design of a joint seminar which is to be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, at the end of the summer semester.

Within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme, Kim Sun and the students of Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia spend the current summer semester at Philipps University Marburg. They attend various courses from the fields of political science and international relations.

The ICWC has been in contact with the Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia and Kim Sun for a longer period of time. In the summer of 2017, members of the ICWC, Kim Sun and further lecturers had met with students from Phnom Penh and Marburg to exchange their ideas on transitional justice during a joint seminar at Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia. The focus of the past field trip lay on (juridical) mechanisms for reconciliation and the proceedings before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) – a hybrid criminal tribunal which investigates numerous crimes committed under the Khmer Rouge regime.

During the convivial gathering at the ICWC, participants discussed first conceptual ideas on the design of a two-week seminar in August 2019 in Phnom Penh. Among other aspects, the exploration of the proximate living environments of students in Phnom Penh was identified as a focal point. Through the study of specific buildings and sites the students are expected to gain an insight into what happened during the rule of the Khmer Rouge between 1975 and 1979 regime from a local history perspective.

Moreover, the exchange of additional junior scientists of Philipps University Marburg and Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia, which will provide the opportunity for lecturers to organize their own seminars, is scheduled for next year.

The members of the ICWC are looking forward to further cooperation with Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia and express their thanks for the fruitful discussion.
