Exams

Here you can find the most important information regarding examinations.

  • How can I tell if I need to register for an examination or assessment?

These study and examination requirements are formally regulated in the module handbook.

Attention: For import modules, the examination regulations that apply are not those of your enrolled program, but those of the program from which the import module originates. A list of all examination regulations is available on the corresponding website of Philipps University.

You can also see which modules require mandatory study and examination achievements on the MARVIN platform under “My Studies” → “Study Planner with Module Plan” by clicking on the title of the module you are interested in. Under the “Basic Data” tab, in the section “Requirements for Earning Credit Points (Type of Examinations)”, it is indicated whether and which achievements must be completed to successfully finish the module. Study achievements listed in this section must be registered per module in the same way as examinations. Please observe the deadlines that apply (which may vary by faculty).

  • How do I register for an exam?

For detailed instructions on how to register for your exams via MARVIN, please refer to the central webpages for exam management with MARVIN. Please note that different rules and deadlines may apply for import modules and courses from other degree programs.

If different exam numbers are available in MARVIN for the same module, the general rule is as follows:

Option A = number 1 at the end

Option B = number 3 at the end

Option C = number 4 at the end

Which option is relevant for you in a given module depends on whether you are taking a lecture with a final exam (Option A), a seminar with a final exam (Option B), or a combination of lecture and seminar with a final exam (Option C).

  • How do I deregister from an exam?

Deregistration is carried out via the same channels as registration (see FAQ “How do I register for an exam?”).

As a rule, the deadlines for deregistration correspond to those for registration.

As a general rule, you should deregister from all exams that you do not intend to take after initially registering, in order to avoid problems in the following semester.

  • What should I consider regarding retake dates and exam attempts?

If you wish to participate in a retake, it is mandatory that you were properly registered for the regular first exam date within the deadline.

You must then independently register for the second exam date via MARVIN within the designated registration period. The requirements for taking the second exam date can be found in the PDF “Overview Exam Registration – How and When.”

  • Do I have to complete the coursework/exams for a module in the same semester?

If you do not complete all required coursework or exams for a module within one semester, even though this is specified in the module description (under: “Duration of the module: One semester”), it may lead to delays in your studies. Not every module is offered every semester (see the “Cycle” information in the module description).

  • How and when do I receive my grade?

Your exam result will automatically appear in your online grade report after it has been recorded. (The examiner either enters the result directly into the exam management system or forwards it to the responsible office for this purpose.)

  • Medical certificate

If you are unable to take the exam or submit your term paper on time for health reasons, please provide the examiner with a medical certificate confirming your incapacity to work.

Please note: If you withdraw from the first exam attempt/appointment due to a medical certificate, the attempt will be credited (notation in MARVIN: ATT = medical certificate). HOWEVER, you are not automatically registered for the second exam attempt/appointment. You must register for it yourself within the specified deadlines. If you are also unable to attend this attempt, you must submit another medical certificate to avoid being recorded with a failed attempt.
