KIRA Study
Has your child often had whistling or wheezing noises in the chest? Then you probably know that the frequency of such episodes increases the likelihood of developing asthma. Bronchial asthma and wheezing are the most common lung diseases in children and adolescents. In the majority of children, the symptoms disappear almost completely - but some children develop permanent asthma. Take part in research into asthma by answering the 11-point questionnaire. This may indicate a later risk of developing asthma. If this is the case, your child can take part in the ALLIANCE study. Your child will receive extensive lung function tests and detailed examinations, some of which will go beyond the routine examinations carried out by the lung specialist.
Who can take part in the study?
Infants and children under 6 years of age, if:
- Your child has had two or more episodes of wheezing or wheezing breathing in the last 12 months
- Your child was born mature (> 37 weeks' gestation) and does not have cystic fibrosis or another serious chronic illness
- Children aged 6 and over with diagnosed asthma and abnormal lung function tests
How does the ALLIANCE study work?
- 1 visit per year
- From the age of 6, 1 visit every 3 years, in between
- One telephone interview per year
Every time you visit:
- Medical examination
- Extensive lung function tests (possible from the age of approx. 4 years)
- Swabs from the nose and throat
- Blood sample with allergy test and questionnaire
What are the advantages of participating in the study?
- Extensive examinations, some of which go beyond the routine examinations carried out by the lung specialist (allergy tests, special lung function tests)
- The results of your child's allergy test, blood count and lung function tests can be made available and explained to your child's doctor on request.
- By taking part, you are making an important contribution to research into childhood asthma and wheezing.
We ask for your participation.
Best regards, your ALLIANCE study team in Marburg.
