Pediatric hematology and oncology
Children and adolescents with blood and tumor diseases are treated in close cooperation with the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Unit at the Giessen site under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dieter Körholz.
Ward
Inpatient and day-care treatment of patients with blood and tumor diseases is carried out at the Giessen site. Outpatient check-ups and tumor follow-up for patients from the Marburg area take place in the branch office at University Hospital Marburg.
If there is a suspected tumor, inpatient clarification may initially take place in close consultation with colleagues from Giessen onsite in Marburg. In addition, colleagues from pediatric surgery will perform surgical tumor removal.
With our partners in Giessen and Marburg, the Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology forms the multicampus Giessen and Marburg Pediatric Oncology Center (POH Center Giessen/Marburg)(GER). This center treats children and adolescents with malignant diseases of the blood and lymphatic system (leukemia and lymphoma), brain tumors and all solid tumors as well as benign disorders of blood formation (hematology). Pediatric oncology takes care of all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of malignant diseases, including psychosocial care. We coordinate all necessary diagnostic measures as well as interdisciplinary treatment with the surgical disciplines and radiation therapy. Chemotherapy, other drug treatments and blood stem cell transplants are carried out on the pediatric oncology ward in Giessen. This ensures excellent care for children and adolescents with cancer or benign hematological diseases.
Radiotherapy
The Marburg Ion Beam Therapy Center (MIT) (GER) is one of only four centers in Germany to offer proton radiation therapy for children – including under anesthesia. Pediatric patients who receive appropriate radiation therapy using protons are cared for during this time on a pediatric oncology outpatient basis in the branch office at University Hospital Marburg.
Outpatient clinic
The Outpatient Clinic for Children and Adolescents with Blood and Tumor Diseases at University Hospital Marburg treats patients with the following diseases:
- Tumor diseases and malignant blood diseases (e.g. leukemia) in children up to the age of 18 years, including tumor follow-up and outpatient examinations. Inpatient treatment with chemotherapy takes place at the Giessen campus.
- Benign disorders of blood formation (hematological diseases) such as hemoglobinopathies (e.g. sickle cell anemia, thalassemia), anemia, diseases of the blood platelets (thrombocytes) and white blood cells (leukocytes).
- Oncological co-care of pediatric patients during radiation therapy using protons.
Interns will have the opportunity to observe in the pediatric oncology outpatient clinic.
