Pediatric pulmonology

In the Department of pediatric pulmonology, we care for children and adolescents with diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract such as bronchial asthma, obstructive bronchitis, congenital lung diseases, cystic fibrosis, rare lung diseases, systemic diseases with lung involvement, and respiratory regulation disorders. We offer all the necessary diagnostic methods, e.g. pulmonary function measurements (spirometry, whole-body plethysmography, nitric oxide in ex-haled air (FeNO), nitrogen washout, exercise lung function, bronchoprovocations and bronchospasmolytic test), sweat test, ciliary functional analysis, allergy testing (skin prick test, specific IgE in blood) and provocation testing in suspected food or drug allergies, rigid and flexible bronchoscopy, polysomnography (sleep laboratory tests).

Depending on the clinical syndrome and stage of the disease, patients are seen at our special consultation hours, our day clinic, or our specialized pediatric ward. Since allergic diseases usually affect several different organ systems, there is an interdisciplinary cooperation of the allergology clinics and departments in the “Allergy Center Hesse” (AZH) (GER). If there is a proven allergy, specific immunotherapy (hyposensitization) can be carried out at our outpatient clinic, including instances of bee or wasp venom allergy.

The sleep laboratory for children and adolescents is operated in close cooperation with the Sleep Medicine Center (GER). Within the framework of “polysomnography”, all relevant aspects of sleep are recorded and analyzed via a modern measuring station. The first presentation is usually made at our special consultation for pediatric sleep medicine. For measurement in the sleep laboratory, the inpatient admission takes place in the late afternoon. The child can usually be discharged the next morning so that there is usually no missed school time.
