Neonatology
Neonatal intensive care unit
As a perinatal center of the highest care level (Level 1), we specialize in the care of premature and sick newborns. In close cooperation with obstetricians, we care for premature and newborn babies in the delivery room, after both vaginal-surgical deliveries and caesarean sections.
You will also have the option of spending part of the pediatric internship trimester during the practical year in the neonatal intensive care unit. Here, you will be actively integrated into the daily routine of the ward and involved in medical diagnostics and therapy. After appropriate training, you will carry out initial care of newborns in the delivery room under supervision.
We provide care for the following clinical syndromes:
- Post-natal adaptation disorders
- Respiratory failure in premature and newborn infants, including respiratory distress syndrome, meconium aspiration syndrome, pneumothorax, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD)
- Cardiovascular system disorders such as persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) or persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA)
- Severe asphyxia
- Neurological clinical syndromes such as neonatal seizures, hydrocephalus, intracranial hemorrhages
- Hyperbilirubinemia, severe blood group incompatibilities, hydrops fetalis
- Severe gastrointestinal disease such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) or focal intestinal perforations (FIP)
- Congenital bacterial and viral infections, sepsis, meningitis
- Nephrological clinical syndromes, including acute renal failure with consecutive neonatal dialysis, if needed
- Congenital metabolic diseases
- Surgical clinical syndromes such as pulmonary, intestinal, central nervous or facial abnormalities
- Retinopathy of prematurity
There are 14 treatment beds available to provide intensive care to these patients. The following procedures are available to us:

- NO ventilation
- Surfactant administration via LISA / INSURE
- Differentiated circulatory therapy
- Hypothermia treatment
- aEEG
- In cooperation with our neurosurgical colleagues: ventriculoperitoneal shunts, external ventricular drains
- Exchange transfusions
- Neonatal dialysis
Neonatal unit 042
As soon as health permits, premature and sick newborns are transferred from the neonatal intensive care unit to neonatal unit 042. This ward includes 12 patient spots as well as 3 mother/child units where the mother can be admitted together with her child.
As an intern during your practical year, you will care for your own patients here. You will conduct rounds independently along with the senior physician and decide on diagnostic and therapeutic measures. You will conduct admission and discharge interviews with the parents under supervision.
In addition, medical interns (German Famulantinnen or Famulanten) will also be actively integrated into patient management.
Outpatient newborn follow-up care and developmental diagnostics
Our outpatient developmental diagnostics clinic provides follow-up care for very immature premature babies (< 32 WoP or < 1500 g) as well as children with severe congenital diseases or abnormalities. At the ages of 6 and 24 months after the original due date, we examine the development of the children together with our psychologists and physical therapists using standardized test procedures (Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development).
Students have the option of attending these office hours.
