Neonatology and pediatric simulation

We are investigating the short- and long-term effects of simulation training on neonatal and pediatric emergency management as part of our neonatal and pediatric simulation training programs.

A team of specially trained physicians and intensive care nurses working at the pediatric clinic under the direction of Dr. med. Nadine Mand regularly conducts Pediatric Basic and Advanced Life Support as well as Neonatal Life Support training. These simulation training sessions are held in the peripheral and intensive care units at our pediatric clinic as well as in other departments of the University Hospital Marburg, and in outside pediatric clinics and maternity hospitals.

Medium- and high-fidelity simulators are used to make the training as realistic as possible.

Using case studies, physicians, nurses and midwives regularly undergo training together in interdisciplinary teams on the algorithms of pediatric and neonatal emergency care to gain more confidence in their actions and to improve teamwork.

The latest achievement of our simulation team is the premature baby simulator “Paul”, a high-fidelity simulator representing a premature baby in the 28th week of gestation weighing about 1000 g. The training with Paul is intended in particular to improve the quality of initial care of very immature preterm infants, who represent a special patient group and whose care requires some practice.

Our simulation training is integrated into various courses of study. Thus, in addition to the continuing education of our medical and nursing colleagues, we would like to investigate the impact of simulation training on the quality of emergency care, team collaboration and patient safety. Furthermore, the effectiveness of different training methods is compared to each other.
