Pediatric gastroenterology

We care for children and adolescents with congenital and acquired diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver at the pediatric gastroenterology specialty consultation, in the pediatric day clinic and on our pediatric wards.

 Students may participate in consultation and gastroenterology specialty diagnostics.

One focus area is the diagnosis and care of infants, children and adolescents with:

  • Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
  • Celiac disease
  • Upper gastrointestinal tract diseases such as gastritis or gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Diseases of the liver and gall bladder such as hepatitis or pancreatitis
  • Therapy-refractory constipation
  • Chronic abdominal pain
  • Failure to thrive and short bowel syndrome

Our diagnostic range of services includes:

  • Imaging techniques such as ultrasound, x-ray, contrast medium imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), scintigraphy (gamma scan) and PET scan
  • Endoscopy of the upper and lower digestive tract (gastroscopy and colonoscopy)
  • Liver biopsies
  • Function tests (H2 breath test, C13 breath test)
  • Long-term pH-metry and impedance measurement
  • PEG placement

For the diagnosis and therapy of our patients, we rely on a multiprofessional team of pediatric gastroenterologists, pediatricians, pediatric intensive care specialists, pediatric radiologists, pediatric nurses, endoscopy nurses, nutritionists and psychologists.
