Writing Advisory Services at the University Library

Are you writing your first term paper or research paper? Do you want to write your thesis as efficiently and professionally as possible? Do you have questions about academic writing?

The Writing Workshop run by the University Library offers students individual advice as well as workshops on academic writing techniques.

  • Advice Topics

Our comprehensive advisory service and the courses on offer comprise all topics on how to write academic or scholarly papers. This includes work organisation, research, literature organisation and management, How to use research literature, efficient reading techniques, how to structure the paper or thesis, knowledge management, writing strategies and text revision.

  • Basic Policy on Advice

Advice on writing techniques is principally for students who are writing academic or scholarly papers in German or English. The main focus is on writing techniques in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Our purpose is to support you during the writing process. Our approach is one of process-oriented, non-directive advice on how to write an academic paper. This means that we offer you information on how to write academic papers and on the writing process in general, as well as advice on work techniques and writing strategies. We offer you assistance in learning self-help strategies by providing you with feedback on text excerpts of not more than five pages. We then discuss with you the best way to proceed with your paper. However, you as the author remain responsible for the text.

The advice can be given anonymously. It is confidential and free.

  • What we do NOT do

The aim of the advice service is to teach you the basics of academic and scholarly writing techniques and to help you learn how to use them in writing academic texts. What does NOT fall  within the scope of our advice service is:

    • Evaluation or assessment of your work, or legal advice,
    • Reading complete papers, proofreading or editing your texts,
    • Giving advice on subject- and content-related, or methodological aspects of the text.

The Writing Workshop cannot replace the guidance provided by your academic supervisor.

  • Workshops

In our workshops we provide you with information on the techniques of academic writing and how to put what you have learned into practice. Our Workshop Programme includes topics on all aspects and phases of the writing process. Registration dates for these workshops are announced in the calendar.
