Project Outline

Patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) often have to wait for a significant period of time before they get access to treatment which leads to prolonged suffering and impairment. Online-based guided self-help programs have shown to be effective in treating MDD and could bridge the gap for patients on a waiting list for psychotherapy until face-to-face therapy starts. The aim of this study is to evaluate a new internet-based guided self-help intervention (Get.On-D) for patients with MDD who are on a waiting list for inpatient therapy. In this RCT 200 patients with MDD are randomized to either Get.On-D or TAU prior to inpatient therapy. The three weeks program contains six modules, including psychoeducation, behavioral activation and problem solving. Participants will be supported by an eCoach who provides regularly written feedback. The primary outcome is observer rated reduction of depressive symptoms. Furthermore a cost-effectiveness analysis from a societal perspective will be conducted. If Get.On-D is proven to be effective patients might start inpatient therapy with reduced depressive symptoms and remission rates could be increased.
