  • Medieval Manuscripts and Fragments

Most of the medieval manuscripts in Marburg University Library consist mainly of non-literary manuscripts of monastic origin (Corvey, Bursfeld and others) without calligraphic decoration or illumination. They are described in a printed catalogue: Die mittelalterlichen Handschriften der Universitätsbibliothek Marburg. Beschrieben von Sirka Heyne. - Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz, 2002 (under the book number: 003 AM 84700 H619. More copies of this work can be found in the Library catalogue and can be borrowed. The catalogue was also digitalised for the Manuscripta Mediaevalia database and is freely available on the internet.

  • Manuscripts of the Modern Period

The book manuscripts of the modern period in the University Library generally have a connection with Marburg University: lecture notes handwritten by the author, omnibus volumes containing university statutes and decrees, transcripts of municipal and territorial legal systems which were needed by the law faculty for its duties involved in handing down verdicts, student registers, as well as the most important object in the collection -  Wilhelm Dilich’s "Urbs et academia Marpurgensis succincte descripta et typis efformata" (beginning of the 17th century). This uncompleted manuscript in the hand of the author, a cartographer and historiograph born in Wabern who became a master architect in the construction of fortresses, is illustrated with 64 inserted woodcut portraits. Its detailed descriptions of the relatively new university and its scholars make it an invaluable source of information.
