Publishing Guidelines of Philipps-Universität Marburg
Ideas and solutions for the world of tomorrow emerge from the exchange within the scientific community. Research publications are a core element of this exchange. Regarding the positioning of Philipps-Universität Marburg in national and international academia, a clear attribution of publications has to be ensured. These guidelines contribute to making the research achievements of the respective authors and of Philipps-Universität Marburg visible.

The publishing guidelines are binding for all members and affiliates of Philipps-Universität as defined by the Hessisches Hochschulgesetz (HHG) in its respective current version. They are based on a broad definition of publications that encompasses all forms and formats of publicly disseminated scientific results from research, education, and transfer. This includes text, software, and data publications as well as presentations and lectures at conferences and meetings, educational resources, patents and other intellectual property rights, project proposals to funding organizations, and academically related contributions in audiovisual media and social media.

This applies regardless of whether the publication is in German or English. If an English-language affiliation statement is mandatory, the name to be used is:

Abbreviations of the affiliation statement shall be avoided.

Members and affiliates of the School of Medicine publish under affiliation with Philipps-Universität Marburg – even if they work at the University Hospital of Gießen and Marburg (UKGM). As prerequisite, they must have a contractual employment with Philipps-Universität Marburg.

In case of further affiliations with institutions external to Philipps-Universität Marburg, e.g. due to joint professorships or cross-institutional research centers, each affiliation has to be indicated. The institution at which the research work was predominantly undertaken is named first.
If there is a change of institution during the research and publishing process, the institution at which the research work was predominantly undertaken has to be indicated. If relevant parts of the research work were undertaken at both institutions, both institutions shall be named.

By using ORCID iD, publications can be clearly assigned to authors, even if they change their name or research institution. ORCID additionally supports the exchange of data between publishing platforms and is therefore also integrated into the university's research-supporting IT infrastructures.

In their publications, researchers at Philipps-Universität Marburg indicate financial support for research projects (research funding) and publications (publication funding) in the funding acknowledgements. The requirements of the respective funding bodies for the disclosure of project funding and the university's requirements for publication funding are taken into account.

Philipps-Universität Marburg strongly encourages its researchers to publish their research results in open access under an open license (e.g. Creative Commons “CC BY”). This can be realized in quality-assured open access journals or books or by publishing via subject-specific or institutional repositories. In addition, the university recommends to its authors that publications which have not been published under a free license are self-archived on the university's repository open_UMR, making them freely accessible.

The Research Information System displays the research activities of Philipps-Universität Marburg in a structured form, enables data integration on other websites, and simplifies research reporting. All researchers at Philipps-Universität Marburg are therefore asked to record their research activities and publications in the Research Information System.

The Publishing Guidelines of Philipps-Universität Marburg follow the guidelines for the declaration of affiliations in publications of the German Rectors’ Conference (Leitlinien zur Nennung von Affiliationen bei Publikationen der Hochschulrektorenkonferenz vom 24.04.2018). They are complemented by the open access policy of Philipps-Universität Marburg from March 2015, the principles for handling research data at Philipps-Universität Marburg (Grundsätze zum Umgang mit Forschungsdaten an der Philipps-Universität Marburg vom 19.12.2017), and the statutes for ensuring good research practice at Philipps-Universität Marburg (Satzung zur Sicherung guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis an der Philipps-Universität Marburg vom 26.04.2022).
