Project Outline

Deficits in emotion-regulation skills are considered to be integral to the development and maintenance of various mental disorders.  Research suggests that the ability to be aware of, understand, accept, tolerate and modify negative emotions is crucial for mental health. Therefore, psychotherapy has increasingly focused on facilitating learning of emotion-regulation skills. Our research group focuses on the relationships between emotion regulation skills and mental disorders and investigates whether Affect Regulation Training (ART; Berking, 2010) helps reducing the symptoms of various mental disorders. Currently, we are evaluating the effectiveness of ART in patients with major depressive disorder and binge-eating-disorder in randomized studies. Soon, we also want to focus on patients with other mental disorders, e. g. alcohol abuse or anxiety disorders.
